So, I am not religious, but I went to a Disciple of Christ school, and so, perhaps through osmosis, learned a thing or two about religion. My personal thought on religion is if you are not handling snakes you are a dilettante as far as Jesus goes. There is a religion where the supplicant bows to the east. If I were a practitioner of this religion I would cary a compass on my person, or in my luggage. If the TSA were to confiscate this compass, I would make damned sure I bought one somewheres between the airport and the hotel. I would not rely upon a phone call to the front desk to ascertain which direction is east. At the very least I would watch the sun set in the west, and figure the opposite direction was east. If I were religious I would not rely upon Martin Luther getting me into heaven, either.

A photograph of me writing the figure “$128,000” on a blackboard was widely published. I deposited the net amount (a little less than that) and began to try to understand the life I’d created. Part of it was going to work for the National Broadcasting Company, which was willing to sign me to a three-year contract as a consultant on public-service and educational broadcasting, at an annual rate of fifty thousand dollars.

Pittsburgh looked pretty good in their first pre-season game against Philadelphia. The Eagles played without Westbrook though. These two teams meet again in week 3 of the regular season so neither team showed much of their playbooks. Santonio Holmes and Ben Roethlisberger hooked up for the Steelers touchdown on a nineteen yard catch. It was a nice play by Holmes to outflank another Eagle great Brian Dawkins. The drive was 8 plays and covered 65 yards, and featured 4 first downs. Roethlisberger’s TD pass came on the drive’s only third down. The Steelers lost back-up QB Charlie Batch to a broken collarbone when Batch had to scramble on a broken play. My biggest concern for the new season is the offensive line. Those fellows played better than I expected, but I am reserving judgement until they play against a non-vanilla defense. The Eagles played like the Eagles. McNabb looked good. I could see the Eagles winning their division and the NFC this season.

We went to the X-Files 2: I Want to Believe today. I liked how Duchovny and Anderson were able to drop right back into their roles. I wished Carter had spent more time with the villains of the piece. The villains needed to scare the audience more. These men were doing horrific things for shaky reasons. I would have liked to see more of the horror. The story was written for Frank Black, and Mulder and Scully were dropped in. There were several actors from the old Millennium show, and perhaps that was why I expected Frank Black to show up at any moment. I was pleasantly surprised to see an old X-File alumni. If you liked the t.v. show, you will enjoy this movie.

So, we had a house guest from Tuesday to Saturday. He was a nice fellow, and we enjoyed his company, and hope he enjoyed ours. His only faux pas was attempting to drink from my glass, and we all know that only heavy weight drinking champs should attempt to drink from my glass. Click on his picture below for a slideshow of his antics.

These are the movies I will part dollars with to see this summer. I love and hate going to the movies. I hate that I can’t have a smoke in the theatre. I hate the prices. I love the big screen. My girl loves the popcorn.

Sixty-nine people witnessed a crime today and did nothing. I am drinking vodka tonics, what are you drinking?
